Awards and Accomplishments

We are proud to announce some of the many accomplishments that the Milpitas Unified School District has made in the last few school years (2008-09, 2007-08; 2006-07; 2005-06; 2004-05; and 2003-04). These accomplishments are highlighted by numerous state and national honors and recognitions for our schools and our talented and dedicated employees.

2008-2009 School Year

  • The completion and integration of a District wide solar energy program that will provide 75% of the District’s electrical energy. The largest offset of energy for a school district in the United States
  • The District’s cumulative API grew to over 800 (812). 

  • Ten of our twelve eligible schools saw gains in their API scores. 

  • Eight of our schools now have API scores of over 800.  

  • The District has one of the highest student graduation rates and lowest dropout rates in the Santa Clara County. 

  • ACSA Region 8 Superintendent of the Year Award

  • ACSA Region 8 Classified Director of the Year Award (Director Maintenance, Operations, Transportation)

  • ACSA Region 8 Middle School Principal of the Year Award (Rancho Middle School)

  • Implemented the Year II goals in the Closing The Achievement Gap Plan
     
  • Began joint administrator/teacher team meetings/trainings exploring culturally proficient curriculum and instruction.
     
  • Provided training to various sites on meeting the needs of our English language learners understanding the difference between ELD instruction and SDAIE instruction and how to use and interpret the Worksheet for Individual Needs (WIN).
     
  • Held the first annual Reclassification Celebration to recognize our English language learners who were being reclassified to fluent English proficient.

  •  Hosted an ELD materials fair for district educators to help support our continuing effort to meet the needs of ELL students.
  • Implementation of Successmaker as a district-wide intervention providing support and guidance on the use of the program and the data analysis of reports provided on student progress within the program.

  • Provided district-wide trainings for GATE and all parents.

  •  Facilitated the preparation of the State-required web-based School Accountability Report Cards (SARC).

  •  Coordinated the successful District Music Festival and the Fremont Symphony Orchestra concert.

  •  Expanded the Raising a Reader Program to include approximately 60 children who attend on a regular basis

  • Successful Crab Feed Fundraiser

  • Established new partnership with Family Giving Tree, LSI, and Embassy Suites which resulted in hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies given to students free of charge

  • Continued partnership with Keypoint Credit Union resulting summer workshop for students, facility and food for administrative summer retreat, adoption of Spangler Elementary School

  • Continued partnership with Kaiser Permanente

  • Continued partnership with Catholic Charities

  • Continued partnership with Waste Management with resulted in new landscaping for Pomeroy Elementary

  • Continued partnership with Milpitas Chamber of Commerce with resulted in Welcome To Milpitas for new teachers

  • Continued partnership with Milpitas Rotary which resulted in scholarships for MHS seniors, donation for MHS Interact Club members to attend Camp Ryla, Leo Murphy Award for MUSD teacher, cash donation from Pumpkin Patch, support for district crab feed, back to school backpacks, adopt a district family for Christmas donation, Fishing Day for Rose Elementary

  • Worked with the City of Milpitas, Kaiser Permanente, and District Office and site staff to provide school transition informational evenings for parents with incoming kindergarten students, middle school students, and high school students.

  • Developing a new collaboration with after-school providers: YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara County Office of Education, City of Milpitas, and Milpitas Child Development Center.

  • New partnerships with San Disk, Wal Mart, Best Buy, Chevron, Kohls, Summit Pointe Golf Course, Microsoft

 

 

2007- 2008 School Year:

• District API grew by 7 points to 799

• District met target for API

• District met target for AYP

• Seven schools showed gains in API (Randall, Rose, Weller, Zanker, Rancho, Russell, MHS)

• Randall grew by 48 points

Rose API grew by 24 points to 783

• Rancho API grew by 18 points to 798

• Zanker API grew by 17 points to 858

• Russell API grew by 13 point to 839

• New 3-year contract reached with the California School Employees Association (CSEA)

• Established a new Memorandum of Understanding with Silicon Valley Education Foundation

• Established new partnership with the India Community Center

• Established new partnership with local churches which resulted in over $20,000 in landscape improvements to Russell Elementary

• Established new partnership with Family Giving Tree which resulted in hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies given to students free of charge

• Established partnership with HSBC Bank which resulted in $5,000.00 donation to the districts PTAs

• Established partnership with Keypoint Credit Union resulting in summer workshop for students; facility and food for the District’s administrative summer retreat, and adoption by Keypoint of Spangler Elementary School

• Held another successful District Crab Feed-($40,000.00)

• Implementation of the first “ALAS” conference for Latino students and parents at San Jose State University

• New district technology plan which has been approved by the CDE

• Held another successful District Science Fair

• Successfully negotiated the Solar Energy contract with Chevron and Bank of America which will result in up to 75% of Districts electrical use generated by solar power and millions of dollars in electrical cost savings to the District

• Held a successful City/School District Safety Drill at Sinnott Elementary

• Established new safety rules, regulations, staff training, and physical plant changes to the swimming program at MHS

• New Kids Club programs at Pomeroy and Russell Elementary

2006-2007 School Year:

• New partnership formed with Kaiser Permanente

• New partnership formed with Catholic Charities

• New partnership formed with the Golden State Warriors, KB Home, and Good Tidings Foundation

• Held another successful District Crab Feed-($50,000.00)

• Revised the district Closing The Achievement Gap (CTAG)

• Developed new 3-year GATE plan 2007-2010

• Implemented Project Cornerstone

• Completed the covered walkway and lighting modernization work at Ayer Educational Center

• Completed Boardroom modernization at district office

• Installed a new computer lab at Rancho

• Completed the installation of Security Alarm Systems in 9-schools

• Successful implementation of Connect ED

• Implemented mandatory wearing of MUSD employee ID badges

• Breathalyzers at MHS

• ASES after school program at Rose and Randall

• Kids Club at Curtner Elementary

2005-2006 School Year:

• William Burnett Elementary School was selected as a “2006 California Distinguished School.”

• Milpitas High School, Thomas Russell Middle School, and Spangler Elementary School were selected for the National Model Schools Project.

• During the summer of 2005, the District participated in a highly successful Strategic Planning retreat, which set District goals through the 2008-09 school year. The five major goals for the District are: 1). Closing the Achievement Gap while improving academic achievement for al students; 2). Increasing community involvement and support; 3). Improving professional growth for all students; 4). Increasing financial resources; 5). Enhancing unity within Milpitas Unified School District.

• Ten of twelve (92%) schools in District met or exceeded API growth goals

• Eight of twelve (66%) schools met all criteria for AYP

• Cal Hills and Community Day School met all ASAM qualifications

• All schools in District earned API scores of 717 and higher

• Three of Five (60%) Title 1 schools with API’s near 800 or better

• Honorable Mention California Distinguished School for Marshall Pomeroy Elementary

2004-2005 School Year:

• Rancho Milpitas Middle School chosen as a “School to Watch.” This prestigious national award identifies high-performing middle schools that are academically excellent, responsive to the developmental challenges of young adolescents, socially equitable, and holding high expectations for all students. Rancho Milpitas was one of only four middle schools throughout the State of California to receive this recognition. It was the only school in all of Northern California to be selected.

• Milpitas Community Day School was honored for having the “Best Program” in the State of California. Only 2 schools out of 365 Community Day Schools throughout the state were so honored.

• Thomas Russell Middle School and Rancho Milpitas Middle School were selected as “2005 California Distinguished Schools.” There are only 7 schools in Santa Clara County selected to receive this award and I am very proud that 2 of these outstanding schools are in the Milpitas Unified School District.

• Principal Michael Madalinski of Rancho Milpitas Middle School as the State of California and Santa Clara County Middle School Principal of the Year.

2003-2004 School Year:

• Spangler and Zanker Elementary Schools, were honored as California Distinguished Schools.

• Calaveras Hills High School, was selected as a California Model Continuation High School.

• The Teachers Supporting Teachers and Drug and Alcohol Counseling at Community Day School are two very special programs that were honored by winning the coveted Santa Clara County Glenn Hoffman Awards.
